Select existing members or a member and data point combination.

The Bar Joist Placement Program dialog appears with a bar joist series and configuration already selected. The series selected is specific to the span or bearing distance.

Note: Value fields for Span (S) and Mark are also completed automatically, but are editable for keying in adjustments (to span) and user preferred nomenclature (to mark).
CAUTION: A series and a span must be selected to enable the Place button.
  4. Enter a value for the Design Load (Plf) parameter.

The Total Load (K) value is updated. This value should not exceed the theoretical load capability of the bar joist as defined by the SJI standards. If it does, select another series and/or chord depth.

  5. Select the Place By option Bearing Endpoints.
  6. Using the temporary construction elements as a reference, adjust seating and extension dimensions on the two End Detail tabs.
Tip: The SJI code check displays recommended seat heights when Seat Height is adjusted and also when the chord offsets are changed.
  7. In the Sections property list, select section definitions for the bar joist members, and associate them with catalog type and catalog item definitions.
  8. In the Preferences property list, activate the Add Detailed Members option to model the individual chord, web and seat members in addition to the simplified beam or envelope representation.
  9. Click Place.

    The bar joist is placed.

CAUTION: Be aware that this tool is only an aid in modeling the joist. It is not intended to be a design tool for selecting the appropriate joist. Recommended values are approximations.
